What is a Career Academy?

A career academy includes the following essential elements:

  • A small learning community
  • A college-prep curriculum with a career theme
  • Partners with employers, the community, and higher education
  • Presents rigorous, relevant, real world projects and problems

Academies have these distinct features:

  • Career Theme—Integrated academic and technical courses
  • Aligned with community college or university career pathways
  • Connected to local business, city governments and post-secondary institutions
  • Strong internship / placement / scholarship opportunities
  • Multiple funding sources

Sixteen WCCUSD academies, including all three academies at El Cerrito High School, have been awarded California Partnership Academies (CPA) funding and status.
