Lesson script:

Dinosaurs have fascinated humans since the first fossilized bones were discovered by ancient people, who created myths about giants, dragons, and winged lions to explain what they had found. Dinosaurs ranged in size from great beasts larger than any animal now on the Earth to tiny lizards. Indeed, not all dinosaurs died out. Some, like sharks and crocodiles, survived and remain, virtually unchanged, in the modern world. However, it is the giant and almost alien animals that ruled the Earth that most capture the imagination: the enormous long-necked plant-eaters and the terrifying, roaring meat-eaters with rows of sharp teeth.

Perhaps most fascinating are the features of dinosaurs that no longer exist among animals, like the armoured spines of the stegosaurus, the thick skull plates of the pachycephalosaurus, or the giant sail of the spinosaurus. There can also be a sense of relief in realising how terrifying life might have been had humans lived at that time, with predators swooping from the sky not just to catch fish, but also people, and carnivores capable of running faster than a man and swallowing him whole.

Toilet Paper: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

______________
Lesson script:

There is no toilet paper on the shelves of supermarkets in Europe, America, and Australia.

Fear has spread, leading to panic shopping, in which people buy more than they need. Food that lasts a long time, such as rice or canned soup, is perhaps the most important, but, bizarrely, the product in most demand is toilet paper. This might be because it is cheap and will eventually be used, unlike some more expensive items that will not last as long and will sooner or later be discarded.

Dramatically, three men with knives and masks threatened a driver who was delivering toilet paper to a supermarket in Hong Kong and stole 600 rolls. The toilet paper was later found hidden in a nearby guesthouse, where police arrested two suspects, while the third was still on the run.

The British Prime Minister has urged people not to stockpile and expressed confidence that stores will still receive supplies, and manufacturers have said they have more than sufficient production capacity. In Australia, officials have urged people to stop panic shopping because there are no shortages. Yet the shelves are empty, and some people are running out because others have too much.

______________
Lesson script:

Mangrove swamps are communities of mangrove trees located in tropical or subtropical coastal areas because they cannot tolerate cold temperatures. In Vietnam, mangroves are common in the South, especially in the Mekong Delta.

Mangrove trees are sometimes called “survivors,” because they have special roots that grow out of the water, in hot conditions, and in brackish water where there is high salinity and low oxygen. Each mangrove tree has a filtration system to protect it from sea salt intrusion, along with a specialised root system that allows the tree to breathe in mud or during high tide.

Mangroves also have an extremely diverse ecosystem. They are home to many wildlife species, such as crocodiles, birds, tigers, deer, monkeys, and bees. Many migratory birds depend on mangroves, including cranes, pelicans, and storks. The area under the complex network of mangrove roots is also a unique habitat – a quiet, safe environment for the children of many animals. Mud shrimp and lobster use the mud below the mangroves to build houses, and mangrove crabs eat the trees’ leaves, which also add nutrients to the mud, becoming a food source for many other bottom-dwelling creatures.

Lesson script:

Mangroves act as green lungs to filter carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. In a report by a team of professors from the Centre for International Forestry Research, mangroves store five times more carbon per square kilometre than other forests. Indonesia has the largest area of mangroves in the world, and the quantity of CO2 that those forests can absorb is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from all the country’s cars. Not only that, mangroves help remove excess nutrients, sediment, and pollutants from oceans and rivers. They thus help to purify water for surrounding ecosystems through complex biochemical processes – breaking down, metabolizing, and absorbing toxic substances.

Mangroves protect land by reducing coastal erosion and defend people, buildings, and fields from natural disasters, such as typhoons, floods, and tsunamis. The trunks, branches, and roots of mangroves act as barriers that reduce the effects of waves, flooding, and strong winds, while helping to maintain the land area by retaining and binding appropriate materials. If that weren’t enough, mangroves provide jobs for people living in the region, including those in the tourism industry who benefit from visitors thrilled by the unique surroundings.

Buying a House: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

Study vocabulary and pronunciation, and practice listening to English words related to the topic of buying a house.

______________
Lesson script:

Buying a house can be simpler in some countries than it is in Vietnam. Although there are restrictions in some cities on who can purchase a property – to ensure that local people can afford a place to live – there are usually no restraints on who can own real estate in most Western countries. You don’t even need to have a visa.

What you do need, however, is money. The simplest way is to save the money, but, because houses can cost a tremendous amount, most people need to borrow from a bank. This requires a special type of loan, called a mortgage. A mortgage is unusual because it is secured, which means that, if you don’t pay what you owe, the bank can sell the house to get its money back. The process of getting a mortgage can be challenging and require you to prove that you can afford to pay the money back, usually through your job. Nevertheless, owning your own house can be wonderful because you are free to do with it whatever you choose, and you don’t have to deal with annoying neighbours in the apartment upstairs!

Victoria Falls: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

______________
Lesson script:

Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It was discovered by Scottish explorer David Livingstone in 1885 and named after Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

Victoria Falls consists of four waterfalls, separated by small islands. The falls originate from the calm waters of the Zambezi River, but when they reach Victoria Falls, the water suddenly falls more than 100 metres, creating a spectacular scene. In the rainy season, the water falls like a hurricane, with thousands of cubic metres of water cascading every second, creating mountains of froth and foam and forming a fog that can be seen from 50km away. The water droplets in the air and the bright African sun create an almost perpetual rainbow.

In the dry season, there is less water, exposing small pools at the top of the waterfall that are only large enough for a few people to sit in. Though they offer spectacular views, they are called death pools as the rushing water constantly threatens to drag bathers into the abyss.

Mobs: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

______________
Lesson script:

In 1993, newspapers and magazines around the world published a picture of a hungry Sudanese child collapsing on his way to a rescue station – behind him, a vulture waiting. The photographer, Kevin Carter, took his own life shortly afterwards, having been repeatedly accused of cruelty for taking pictures but refusing to help. Yet journalists working in Sudan had been warned to avoid contact with people to avoid spreading disease. The only thing he could do was kick the vulture away. The anonymous crowd of people who condemned him soon learned that, thanks to his photograph, the world had seen how hungry and miserable life in Africa could be. He may not have helped the child, but he indirectly helped save many lives.

Crowd behaviour, also called mob psychology, is the effect of the actions of many people pressuring individuals to make decisions based on what others are doing rather than their own reasoning. Although it can be negative and lead to destructive mobs – both in real life and online – it can also encourage people to expend efforts to do good and work together to earn the acceptance and membership of the crowd.

Imports: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

Học từ mới, luyện phát âm các từ vựng và trau dồi kỹ năng nghe bài đọc tiếng Anh qua chủ đề Hàng nhập khẩu.

Study vocabulary and pronunciation, and practice listening to English words related to the topic of imports.

All images sourced from unsplash.com and pexels.com or created by English Treasure.
______________
Lesson script:

Imports are quite familiar to Vietnamese people. The preference for imported goods is partly a matter of style, distinctiveness, and variety – not only in high-value products, like electronics and fashion, but also name-brand consumer goods. It is also partly a matter of trust in product quality. Imports from Europe, the USA, Japan, and Korea meet the standards that are not only set, but also enforced, in those countries – something which cannot always be said for goods that are sold domestically.

The domestic market is, unfortunately, rife with goods of unknown origin, including poor quality imports from countries with lax regulations and cheap products made in China that carry false labels and result in domestic brands losing consumer trust. There are still Vietnamese brands with high standards, but the prices may not be competitive with poor quality fakes or the designs may be less attractive than the high-end imports from Europe or America. Yet there are also disadvantages to buying imports, including the practical challenge of shipping, the costs of paying intermediaries and taxes, and often the uncertainty as to whether the goods will be lost or seized before being delivered.

Slang: English Treasure – Vocabulary, Listening, Pronunciation

Study vocabulary and pronunciation, and practice listening to English words related to the topic of slang.

All images sourced from unsplash.com and pexels.com or created by English Treasure.
______________
Lesson script:

Slang is an informal dialect of a language that is used in everyday communication by a group of people – often young people. Slang words generally have symbolic rather than direct meanings, and knowing those meanings helps you to feel like a member of the group. Slang occurs in every country and every language; in the US, it is sometimes called “street language” or the “language of young people” – although the latter usually by old people who had their own slang when they were younger. Slang also follows its own trends, creating something unique to each generation.

In Vietnam, slang was once mostly borrowed from Chinese, but, with greater emphasis on English in schools, it is increasingly formed by borrowing English words. Because slang is an unofficial form of speech, it can be used for fun or entertainment or with close friends, but it should be used only in appropriate contexts. Slang is a bad idea in formal communication, both because it can give a poor impression and because there is a risk it will not be understood. Nevertheless, some young people still use slang in tests and even in graduation exams.

______________
Lesson script:

The Netherlands is not only famous for its colourful tulips, picturesque windmills, and flat landscape, but also for the adorable village of Giethoorn. The settlement is more than 700 years old and is quiet, peaceful, and poetic. Perhaps most notable, it is also completely free of cars and dust.

The village was built around 1230 by people from southern Europe. While working in a field, they discovered many goat horns buried in the ground, believed to be a consequence of a great flood in 1170. The village was therefore named “Geytenhoren”, meaning “the excavation of the goat horn”, later shortened to the name it holds today.

Giethoorn is now in a nature reserve, 120km from Amsterdam. The idyllic town has no roads, but is surrounded on all sides by canals over which span delicate wooden bridges. All cars must be left outside, and only bicycles are permitted. The houses have thatched roofs and are surrounded by water, just like an island. The only way to enter the village in summer is on small boats or walking across the bridges, but in winter, it becomes truly magical as the canals around Giethoorn completely freeze.
